International Student Center Department cannot sponsor travel

RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the general supervision of the Assistant
Director for Education Abroad, the Exchange and Education Abroad Adviser
will plan and implement quality advising services and programs for SDSUs
inbound exchange students and outbound study abroad students. Plan,
implement, and evaluate methods for recruiting, processing, admitting,
and preparing prospective inbound students participating in SDSUs
Student Exchange Programs. Design and implement the Prospective Exchange
Student Admission Program. Develop policies and procedures that
facilitate the admission of qualified exchange students. Work with
International Admissions Coordinator to ensure all related forms are
processed and distributed in a timely manner. Develop Welcome Packets
and Orientation Packets. Advise students on SDSUs 190+ study abroad and
exchange programs. Track prospective participants. Design and implement
pre-departure orientations and re-entry programs. Market study abroad
program to meet campus participation goals. Develop and distribute tools
that optimize health and safety awareness. Enhance resource library and
alumni program.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Extensive knowledge of exchange and
education abroad advising principles, organizational behavior, student
personnel administration, group dynamics, public relations, and student
development theory. Knowledge of intercultural communications and
cross-cultural relations. General knowledge of the federal regulatory
requirements affecting non-immigrant students. Knowledge of the
practices and procedures related to international education and
exchange. Oral and written communication, problem solving, program
planning and evaluation skills. Computer literacy, including word
processing, graphic design, desktop publishing, database management, web
design, and spreadsheets skills. Ability to design and conduct
workshops for a variety of training objectives. Ability to design
marketing plans and implement successful strategies to meet specified
goals. Ability to motivate students to participate in international
learning programs and activities. Ability to effectively use
interpersonal communications, particularly related to advising students
and interacting with faculty, staff, and parents, both at SDSU and
institutions overseas.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: Bachelors degree in related field and a
minimum of two years of related experience in professional student
services, or equivalent, including one year experience in international
education administration and/or advising at tertiary level. Masters
degree in an internationally related field preferred. Previous study
abroad experience as a student and/or international living experience
preferred. Second language fluency highly preferred.

Reporting to the Senior International Student Advisor, serve as a key
member of the International Student Advising Team that provides crucial
advising and other services for all international students (currently
2,200+) at UCSD so that they can maintain their legal non-immigrant
status or address other related issues. Advise students and dependents
on a variety of issues, including: immigration; cross-cultural
adjustment; and personal issues that may include advice for dependents,
among many other issues. Provide professional advice and help students
comply with federal, state, and University regulations relating to
international students, travel, and employment. Accurately record
information in fsaAtlas and the Student and Exchange Visitor Information
System (SEVIS) within specified timelines as required by regulation.
Support the Senior International Student Advisor in maintaining
effective working relationships with government agencies, campus
departments, and community volunteers. Provide key support to the Senior
International Student Advisor and Director of the International
Student/Scholar Office on projects that promote and enhance the
educational and cultural experiences of UCSD students.
QUALIFICATIONS:
* Minimum of one year of professional advising experience in a
university international student advising operation. Requires
theoretical and operational knowledge of University policies and
procedures involving international students, as well as governmental
regulations.
* Proven track record in customer service. Must be dedicated to
international students and sincerely wish to work for their success.
Must possess the full range of skills, knowledge and abilities to assess
the needs of students, while complying with policies and regulations.
* Demonstrated ability to communicate patiently, sensitively, and
effectively in cross-cultural scenarios, including communicating with
individuals and groups from different countries, hometowns, geography,
cultures, languages, socio-economic backgrounds, experiential histories,
and more. Also, often called to bridge the cross-cultural gaps in
communication style between students and different administrative
offices on campus, and to make effective referrals to campus and
community resources.
* Demonstrated knowledge of federal regulations affecting international
students, especially those in F and J statuses. Familiarity with the
following I-94 statuses: F-3 Commuter Students, B-1 Business Visitor, WB
Business Waiver, B-2 Tourist Visitor, WT Tourist Waiver.
* Experience in using the Student and Exchange Visitor Information
System (SEVIS). One-year experience as a DSO required.
* Demonstrated ability to handle a high-volume caseload with
sensitivity, speed, and accuracy. Must show evidence of using systems
and systematic methods to organize and streamline formidable workload.
* Demonstrated skill in planning, designing, publicizing, implementing,
and evaluating programs, workshops, and events for students, campus
staff, and volunteers.
